Tactile Transmissions at Longy School of Music

Longy School of Music of Bard College

Ensemble Decipher will perform at Longy School of Music of Bard College’s Pickman Hall in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Monday, February 22, 2027, at 7:00 pm, featuring Longy composition faculty Niloufar Nourbakhsh. The performance is free and open to the public, but please register in advance.

Ensemble Decipher builds instruments out of everyday objects. Every work on this program is about transmission and what gets warped along the way.

Rob Cosgrove’s Rhizome Music sends live drums through microphones into vintage radios and back into the acoustic instruments, building a hall of mirrors out of sound. Joseph Bohigian’s Stone Dreams attaches motion sensors to stones and transmits the data by radio, turning the stones themselves into the instrument. Niloufar Nourbakhsh’s Of Breath and Feeding Back takes up aging and the loss of youth. Erin Rogers’ Telegraph runs from homing pigeons to electrical telegraphy, with nonsense text passed between players while one performer mixes the room live.

Decipher in Illinois March 2025

Frequency Series Presents Ensemble Decipher

Ensemble Decipher will perform two shows in Illinois in March 2025 with music by Erin Rogers, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and Taylor Long and premieres by Eric Lemmon and Rob Cosgrove. The ensemble will be in residence at Knox College in Galesburg March 6–7, 2025, followed by a performance at Constellation’s Frequency Series in Chicago on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 8:30 pm. Ensemble Decipher Performs in Maryland

Ensemble Decipher is excited to be a resident ensemble at the National Philharmonic’s Summer String Institute this week. We’ve had a blast the past two days working with the wonderful students at SSI!
 
We are teaching two groups of string students about music and technology. One younger group fittingly called the “Guarneri” group is learning how to play as an ensemble with live-looping and live processing through effects like delay, reverb, and distortion. The older group, the “Strad’s,” are working with Cycling ‘74’s Max/MSP and learning to both improvise and compose with computers!
 
We are performing this Thursday with the students, along with two works from our repertoire: Pamela Z’s Twenty Answers and Niloufar Nourbakhsh’s Of Breath and Feeding Back.
 
Our concert will be at 4:00 pm on July 25, 2024, at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation (6301 River Rd, Bethesda, MD 20817).

Ensemble Decipher Performing at New Music for Strings 2021

We are heading to #Denmark to perform at this year’s New Music for Strings and we couldn’t be more excited! There, we will be performing as the Ensemble in Residence, and premiering works hot off the press by Mari Kimura and Sophia Sagaradze, as well as presenting works from our repertoire by Niloufar Nourbakhsh, Margaret Schedel, and Yaz Lancaster. Additionally, our very own Eric Lemmon collaborated with New Music for Strings co-Founder and Artistic Director Anne Sophie Andersen on a new work, which will be premiered as well!
